Frequently asked questions
What Wellboy does, what it costs and what happens to your data. If your question is not here, ask us.
Basics
What is Wellboy?
Wellboy is a training and nutrition app for iPhone and Android. You build workouts from a library of 414 movements and run them guided or as a plain logging list, you log what you eat by hand, by barcode or from a photo, and both sides add up in one progress view.
There is an AI coach in the app, but the app does not depend on it: logging your training and your food is the core, and that part is free.
Which phones and watches does Wellboy work on?
iPhone with iOS 16.1 or newer, and Android phones on Android 8.0 or newer.
On iPhone there is also an Apple Watch app (watchOS 10 or newer) for running a workout from your wrist, and a session in progress shows on the lock screen and in the Dynamic Island. There is no browser version: Wellboy is a phone app.
When can I download Wellboy?
Wellboy is out on the App Store and Google Play: download it for iPhone or get it for Android.
Do I need an account?
You can start using the app right away: the first session runs on an anonymous account that lives on your device. At the end of onboarding you register a sign-in method (Apple, Google, or an email address and password).
That registration is what keeps your data if your phone breaks or you switch to a new one. One account is meant for one person.
Which languages does Wellboy speak?
English and Finnish, all the way down. The interface, the step-by-step instructions and the names of all 414 movements are written in both languages by hand, not machine translated.
You can also keep the app in one language and the movement names in the other, which helps if you learned the exercises under their English names.
Does Wellboy work offline?
Yes for the parts you use every day. Your data lives in a database on your phone, so workouts, sets, meals typed in by hand, recipes and body measurements are logged with no connection at all and sync once you are back online.
A connection is needed for syncing, AI features, purchases, share codes and barcode lookups.
How old do you have to be to use Wellboy?
13 is the floor, and in some countries the limit is higher (up to 16) because of local data protection rules. The app asks for your date of birth during onboarding and applies the limit for your country.
Is Wellboy medical advice?
No. Wellboy is a wellness and fitness app, not a healthcare service, and nothing in it is medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.
If you have a medical condition or an injury, are pregnant, or have symptoms, talk to a doctor or another healthcare professional before starting a new exercise or diet routine.
Training
How do I build a workout?
You pick movements from the library and choose what each one is measured in: weight and reps, reps only, a timed hold, or distance. Movements can be grouped into supersets, circuits and timed blocks (AMRAP, EMOM, for time), and the result is saved as a template you can run again.
If you would rather not plan anything, you can start an empty session and add movements as you go.
What is the difference between guided and list mode?
Two ways to run the same session. Guided shows one step at a time with a full-screen clock and walks you through sets and rests. List is a plain logging list of every movement and set, the way you would tick off a paper sheet.
You can switch between them in the middle of a session, and you can set which one each session type opens in.
What is in the exercise library?
414 movements: barbell and dumbbell work, bodyweight and calisthenics, kettlebells, cardio machines, mobility, yoga and pilates. Every one has a demo clip, a start and an end still, the muscles and equipment it needs, and step-by-step instructions in English and Finnish.
You can browse the whole library here before installing anything: the exercise library.
Do I need gym equipment?
No. Wellboy does not ask you to maintain an equipment list. Home training includes movements whose required equipment suits a typical home setup, plus any movements you mark as home exercises. Every movement shows the equipment it needs, and the AI generator uses only movements you have unlocked.
Can I follow a training program instead of building my own?
Yes. Programs lay training days out on your calendar, and a short quiz picks a starting program from your goal, experience and schedule. The free plan keeps one program active at a time, Pro removes that limit.
Does Wellboy track heart rate, calories and steps?
It reads them from Apple Health or Health Connect once you connect it. A workout summary can then show average and maximum heart rate, time in heart rate zones and active calories, and your day card can show your step count.
The live heart rate pill during a session needs a watch that is recording at the same time. On iPhone the Wellboy Apple Watch app does that.
What happens if I close the app in the middle of a workout?
Nothing is lost. The session is saved on your phone as you go and picks up where you left it when you open the app again. Leaving the workout screen only minimizes it: a small bar keeps the session and its timers running above the tab bar.
Food
How do I log a meal?
Three ways, all ending in the same day log: type it in by hand, scan the barcode of a packaged product, or take a photo and let the AI estimate it. You can also cook a recipe from your own cookbook and log the result as one meal.
Water goes in the same log with one tap.
How accurate is the meal photo scan?
It is an estimate, and the app says so. The scan gives a name, an estimated portion size and the macros, and you review them before anything is saved: adjust the portion with a slider, correct the weight, or throw the estimate away.
For a packaged product the barcode is the accurate route, because it reads the actual label values.
Where does the nutrition data come from?
Basic foods come from a food bank that ships inside the app, built from Finland's Fineli database (CC BY 4.0) and USDA food composition data, so searching and adding them works offline.
Barcoded products come from Open Food Facts and, for the United States, the USDA branded food data, through Wellboy's own product mirror.
Can I add my own recipes?
Yes. The cookbook takes your recipes with ingredients, steps and a photo, works out the nutrition per portion, and has a cooking mode that keeps the screen awake and walks through the steps with timers. Ingredients can be pushed to a grocery list.
Can I set calorie and macro goals?
Yes, either by typing the numbers you want or by letting the app suggest them from your profile and goal. The day view shows how the day is going against them, and the progress tab builds its nutrition trends from the days you have checked off as done.
How many calories should I eat a day?
There is no single number: it depends on your body, your week and what you are after. Our calorie calculator estimates it from height, weight, age, sex, activity level and goal, and gives you the protein, carb and fat targets that go with it.
It runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you type into it is sent anywhere. The number it gives you is the same kind of daily target the app then measures your days against.
AI
What does the AI actually do in the app?
Three things: it estimates a meal from a photo, it answers as a coach in a chat, and it generates a workout for the time you have, the place you are training and the movements you have unlocked. Everything else in the app is ordinary logic, and you can use Wellboy without touching an AI feature.
Which AI is used, and where does my input go?
The model is OpenAI's, and the app never talks to it directly. Your request goes to Wellboy's own server in the EU, which holds the API key, checks your usage limits and forwards only what the feature needs. Because the request is made by our server, OpenAI sees the server, not your device.
The details are in the Privacy Policy, section 5.
Is my data used to train AI models?
No. Requests are sent with the provider's application-state storage switched off, and neither Wellboy nor OpenAI uses your inputs to train models. OpenAI may keep short-lived API logs for abuse monitoring under its own terms.
Do my meal photos get uploaded?
The photo is cropped and shrunk on your phone and sent for the estimate only. It is not stored on Wellboy's servers: the picture on the meal card stays on your device, and deleting the meal deletes it.
Who are the people in the demo clips?
They are not people. Both coaches are AI-generated avatars that we produced ourselves for every movement in the library, which is why every clip and still on this site carries the AI GENERATED label. The instruction texts under them are written by hand.
Pro and credits
Is Wellboy free?
Yes, and the free plan is meant to work on its own. Logging workouts, meals, water, sleep, body measurements and progress photos is free and unlimited, and you can browse the full movement library.
Your free starter pack includes one movement pack and one challenge. Credits earned in the app unlock more movements, packs and challenges. The cookbook, grocery list, programs, streaks and redeeming a share code are also available without Pro.
Wellboy Pro is an optional membership on top of that.
What are credits and how do I get them?
Credits are the in-app currency for unlocking movements, movement packs and challenges, refilling your AI allowance, creating share codes and adding barcode-scanned foods on the free plan. AI requests use a separate monthly allowance and do not cost credits.
You earn credits through the daily collect, level rewards, streak badges, friend invites and challenges. The app shows the credit price before you confirm anything.
Can I buy credits with money?
No. Credits cannot be bought, they are earned in the app only, and they are not part of any paid plan. They are not money: they have no cash value and cannot be transferred or cashed out.
What does Wellboy Pro include?
Pro gives you lower credit prices for movements, includes every challenge while your membership is active, and gives you 200 AI uses a month. The Free plan includes 5 AI uses a month.
It also removes credit charges from food lookups and share code creation, unlocks premium analytics and full history in the progress tab, and allows unlimited active programs.
What does Pro cost, and how do I cancel?
Pro is offered as a recurring subscription or a one-time lifetime purchase when available. Your local price and any current offer are shown in the app and at the store checkout.
A subscription is cancelled where it was bought (App Store: Settings, your Apple account, Subscriptions. Google Play: Play Store, Payments and subscriptions). Deleting the app does not cancel it.
What happens to my workouts if Pro ends?
Nothing is deleted. Movements and packs you unlocked stay yours, and existing workouts remain usable. Access to challenges supplied only by Pro ends, your AI allowance returns to the Free plan, and if you had several programs running you pick one to keep active while the rest move to a read-only archive.
Your data
Where is my data stored?
First on your phone. Wellboy keeps a local database and reads everything from it, which is why the app works offline. When you are online, your content syncs to a cloud database in the EU (Google Cloud Firestore, Finland region) under a private account id that only your signed-in account can read or write.
Do you sell my data or show ads?
No ads and no third-party product analytics in this version, and we do not sell your data. Some Google SDK components the app uses (Firebase, ML Kit) report limited technical telemetry to Google, which is spelled out in the Privacy Policy.
Can I use Wellboy on more than one device?
Yes. Sign in with the same account and your synced content follows: workouts, meals, recipes, body data, programs and progress. A few things stay on the device on purpose, for example coach chat history, meal photos and the grocery list.
Can I export my data or delete my account?
Both, from inside the app. Export writes a ZIP with your data as JSON plus your image files. Deleting your account wipes the local copy and the synced data in the cloud.
You can also ask for deletion without the app by emailing [email protected]. What deletion covers and what has to stay (store purchase records) is described on the support page.
Does Wellboy connect to Apple Health or Health Connect?
If you turn it on. The import is read-only and covers weight, body fat, resting heart rate, waist (iPhone), daily steps and active energy, and anything you typed in by hand is never overwritten.
Wellboy does not write into your health app, with one exception: a workout you record with the Apple Watch app is saved into Apple Health on your own devices.
There is no direct connection to other fitness services: what your watch or tracker writes into Apple Health or Health Connect is what Wellboy can read.
Does Wellboy send crash reports?
Only if you switch them on: crash reporting is off by default. Turned on, it sends technical crash and error data (never your content) to Firebase Crashlytics, and you can turn it back off at any time in Settings.
Sharing and streaks
What are streaks, XP and levels?
You check off each day when it is done, which keeps a streak running and earns credits. Logging training and food earns XP, XP raises your level, and levels unlock rewards in the app such as accent colors.
It is a habit tracker sitting on top of the log, and none of it is required: the app works the same if you ignore it.
Is there a social feed or followers?
No. Wellboy has no feed, no followers and no public profile. The only things that travel between people are share codes and friend invite codes, and you hand those out yourself.
Celebrate your wins on Instagram and TikTok, that is what they are for. Wellboy is a training and food log, not a social media: nothing to scroll here, nobody to compare yourself to.
