Lat Stretch (Chair)

  • Beginner
  • Mobility

This stretch has you kneeling in front of a chair with your elbows resting on the seat while you walk your knees back and let your chest sink down. It lengthens the lats through a long, held stretch rather than active movement. Beginners use it at home for time, as a warmup, a cooldown or part of a recovery flow.

How to

  1. Kneel in front of a chair and place your elbows on the seat.
  2. Walk your knees back and sink your chest toward the floor.
  3. Keep your arms long, hips over your knees.
  4. Breathe into the sides of your back and hold.

Form cues

  • Let your ribs expand with each slow breath.
  • Keep your neck relaxed, chin tucked slightly.
  • Press your palms lightly into the seat.

Common mistakes

  • Knees creep forward under the hips. Walk your knees further back from the chair.
  • Shoulders hunch up near the ears. Relax your shoulders down away from your ears.
  • Chest barely moves toward the floor. Let gravity sink your chest lower each breath.
