Dumbbell Walking Lunge
- Beginner
- Gym
- Home
- Hybrid race
The dumbbell walking lunge holds a dumbbell in each hand and steps forward into a lunge, then drives up and straight into the next step rather than returning to standing. It trains the quads, glutes and hamstrings on each leg as you travel across the floor. Beginners use it at home, in the gym or in hybrid races, for weight and reps.

How to
- Hold dumbbells at your sides and stand tall.
- Step forward and lower your back knee toward the floor.
- Drive through your front foot to rise.
- Step straight into the next lunge with the other leg.
Form cues
- Keep your torso tall, not leaning forward.
- Drop your back knee straight down, not forward.
- Exhale as you drive into the next step.
Common mistakes
- Front knee drifts past the toes. Keep your front shin close to vertical.
- Steps land narrow, causing wobble. Keep a hip-width path between your feet.
- Back knee slams into the floor. Lower under control and tap the floor lightly.
