Walking Lunge

  • Beginner

  • Hybrid race

The walking lunge steps forward into a split stance, lowering your back knee toward the floor before you drive up and step into the next lunge with the other leg. Moving continuously forward trains the quads, glutes and hamstrings on both legs every rep. Beginners use it for reps at home or as part of hybrid race training, as a warmup, a main move or a finisher.

How to

  1. Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart.
  2. Step forward and lower your back knee toward the floor.
  3. Drive through your front foot to rise.
  4. Step straight into the next lunge with the other leg.

Form cues

  • Keep your torso upright instead of leaning forward.
  • Keep your front knee stacked over your ankle.
  • Exhale as you drive up out of each lunge.

Common mistakes

  • Front knee travels forward past the toes. Step far enough that your shin stays vertical.
  • Back knee slams hard into the floor. Lower with control and tap the knee lightly.
  • Torso leans forward over the front leg. Keep your chest lifted and stacked over your hips.
