Dumbbell Push Press
- Intermediate
- Functional
- Home
- Hybrid race
The dumbbell push press dips the knees briefly, then drives through the legs to help press dumbbells overhead in one motion. It trains the front delts, triceps and quads together, using the legs to move more weight than a strict press. Intermediate lifters use it at home, in functional training or hybrid races, for weight and reps.

How to
- Hold dumbbells at your shoulders, feet hip-width.
- Dip your knees slightly, torso upright.
- Drive up with your legs and press the dumbbells overhead.
- Lock out, then lower back to your shoulders.
Form cues
- Keep the dip short, just a quick knee bend.
- Time your breath out with the drive up.
- Keep your torso upright through the whole dip.
Common mistakes
- Knee dip turns into a full squat. Keep the dip shallow, just below quarter depth.
- Press starts before the legs finish driving. Let the leg drive lead, then press overhead.
- Dumbbells drift forward instead of straight up. Press the dumbbells in a straight line overhead.
