Push Press

  • Intermediate
  • Functional
  • Gym

The push press starts with the bar racked at your collarbones, then uses a quick dip and drive from your legs to help press it overhead. The leg drive lets you move more weight than a strict press, training the front delts, triceps and quads together. Intermediate lifters use it in the gym or functional training, for weight and reps as a main lift or a finisher.

How to

  1. Hold the bar at your collarbones, feet hip-width.
  2. Dip your knees slightly, torso upright.
  3. Drive up with your legs and press the bar overhead.
  4. Lock out, then lower back to your shoulders.

Form cues

  • Drive up the instant your knees finish dipping.
  • Keep the bar path close to your face.
  • Exhale sharply as you lock out overhead.

Common mistakes

  • A pause creeps in between the dip and drive. Drive up in one continuous motion.
  • Torso leans back to help the bar up. Keep your torso upright through the whole drive.
  • Arms stay slightly bent at the top. Punch the bar up until your elbows lock.
