Lying Leg Raise
- Beginner
- Home
The lying leg raise lifts both straight legs from the floor to vertical using only your bodyweight and a mat. It isolates the abs while your lower back stays pinned to the floor rather than arching. Beginners use it at home for reps, as a warmup, a main move or a finisher in circuits and timed formats.

How to
- Lie on your back, legs straight, hands under your hips.
- Press your lower back into the floor.
- Raise your legs to vertical with control.
- Lower slowly without letting your back arch.
Form cues
- Keep a slight bend in your knees.
- Exhale as you lift your legs toward vertical.
- Move slowly to keep tension in your abs.
Common mistakes
- Lower back arches off the floor. Press your lower back down and slow the lift.
- Legs swing up using momentum. Lift with control instead of swinging your legs.
- Range of motion stops short of vertical. Raise your legs all the way to vertical.
