Dumbbell Step-up

The dumbbell step-up holds a dumbbell in each hand while you step onto a box, driving through the lead heel to stand tall on top. It trains the quads and glutes on each leg in turn, without help from the trailing leg pushing off the floor. Beginners use it at home, in the gym or in hybrid races, for weight and reps.

How to

  1. Hold dumbbells and stand facing the box.
  2. Step up with one foot, driving through that heel.
  3. Stand tall on top without pushing off the floor leg.
  4. Step down with control and alternate legs.

Form cues

  • Keep your torso upright, not leaning forward.
  • Press your whole foot flat on the box.
  • Exhale as you drive up to standing.

Common mistakes

  • Back foot pushes off the floor. Let the front leg do all the lifting.
  • Knee caves inward on the way up. Push your knee out in line with your toes.
  • Step lands too close to the box edge. Place your whole foot solidly on the box.
