Step-up
- Beginner
- Home
- Hybrid race
The step-up drives your bodyweight up onto a box or bench one leg at a time, using your heel to lead the push. It trains the quads and glutes through a compound, single-leg pattern. Beginners use it at home or in hybrid race training, working reps on each leg before moving to a loaded version.

How to
- Stand facing the box, feet hip-width.
- Step up with one foot, driving through that heel.
- Stand tall on top without pushing off the floor leg.
- Step down with control and alternate legs.
Form cues
- Exhale as you drive up onto the box.
- Keep your torso upright instead of leaning forward.
- Let your trailing leg stay light, just for balance.
Common mistakes
- The back leg pushes off the floor. Let the top leg do all the work.
- Knee caves inward on the way up. Track your knee in line with your toes.
- Torso lunges forward to reach the top. Stay upright and step up, not forward.
