Decline Push-up

The decline push-up presses your bodyweight up from a plank with your feet raised on a surface, hands slightly wider than your shoulders. The raised angle shifts extra load onto the chest, front delts and triceps. Intermediate lifters use it at home or in calisthenics training, for reps as a main exercise or a finisher.

How to

  1. Place your feet on a raised surface, hands on the floor.
  2. Set your hands slightly wider than shoulders.
  3. Lower your chest toward the floor, body in one line.
  4. Press back up to straight arms.

Form cues

  • Spread your fingers wide and press through your palms.
  • Keep your hips in line, not sagging or piking.
  • Exhale as you press back up to the top.

Common mistakes

  • Wrists bend back sharply at the bottom. Stack your wrists under your palms, fingers spread.
  • Hips sag or pike during the press. Brace your core to hold one straight line.
  • Elbows flare straight out to the sides. Keep your elbows angled in, not flared out.
