Calf Raise
- Beginner
- Home
The bodyweight calf raise has you rise onto your toes from standing, either on flat ground or a step edge for extra range, then lower with your heels dropping below the step. It isolates the calves through a simple push-and-stretch pattern. Beginners use it at home for reps as a warmup, a main move or a finisher.

How to
- Stand tall with the balls of your feet on the floor or a step edge.
- Rise up onto your toes as high as you can.
- Pause at the top, squeezing your calves.
- Lower slowly, letting your heels drop for a stretch.
Form cues
- Keep your legs straight, knees soft.
- Push through your big toe and second toe.
- Hold onto a wall or rail for balance.
Common mistakes
- Knees bend to help push up. Keep your legs straight through the rise.
- Rise happens too fast to feel the squeeze. Pause a beat at the top each rep.
- Heels barely drop below the step. Let your heels sink well below the step.
