The Saw
- Beginner
- Pilates
The saw has you seated tall with your legs wide and arms out to the sides, rotating your torso to reach one hand past the little toe before rolling back up tall. It trains the obliques through the twist and stretches the hamstrings as you reach. Beginners use it as a warmup, cooldown or recovery flow, alternating sides for reps with no equipment.

How to
- Sit tall with legs wide, arms out to the sides.
- Rotate your torso toward one leg.
- Reach your opposite hand past the little toe, "sawing" it.
- Roll up tall and alternate sides.
Form cues
- Exhale fully as you reach forward.
- Keep both hips pressed flat on the floor.
- Feel the stretch along the back of your thigh.
Common mistakes
- Your hips rotate along with your torso. Anchor your hips and rotate from your ribs.
- You bounce hard into the stretch. Reach forward once with a slow, steady pull.
- Your back rounds instead of rotating. Lengthen your spine tall, then twist from there.
