Side Lunge
- Beginner
- Home
The side lunge steps wide to one side, sitting your hips back and bending that knee while the other leg stays straight. It trains the quads, glutes and adductors through a sideways, unilateral lunge pattern. Beginners use it for reps at home, as a warmup, a main strength move or worked into a circuit.

How to
- Stand with your feet together.
- Step wide to one side and sit into that hip.
- Keep the other leg straight and chest tall.
- Push back to standing and alternate sides.
Form cues
- Point your stepping foot slightly outward before you sit.
- Drive through your heel to stand back up.
- Keep your eyes level and looking straight ahead.
Common mistakes
- Bent knee caves inward over the foot. Push that knee out over your toes.
- Torso leans forward instead of sitting back. Sit your hips straight back into the lunge.
- Straight leg's foot lifts off the floor. Root that foot flat and keep the leg straight.
