Roll-Up

  • Beginner
  • Pilates

The roll-up starts flat on your back with your arms reaching overhead, then curls you forward one vertebra at a time until you fold over your legs. It trains the abs through slow spinal control rather than speed. Beginners use it as a warmup, a cooldown or a recovery flow, done for reps with no equipment.

How to

  1. Lie on your back with arms extended overhead.
  2. Reach your arms up and curl off the mat one vertebra at a time.
  3. Fold forward over your legs, abs pulled in.
  4. Roll back down slowly with control.

Form cues

  • Exhale as you curl up off the mat.
  • Press your heels down so your legs stay still.
  • Keep your gaze toward your knees, not the ceiling.

Common mistakes

  • You jerk upward using momentum. Slow the lift and let your abs do the work.
  • Your feet lift off the floor. Root your heels down and keep your legs still.
  • Your shoulders shoot up before your head. Nod your chin down first, then roll up in order.
