The push-up presses your bodyweight up from a high plank, hands slightly wider than your shoulders and your body in one straight line. It trains the chest, front delts and triceps together as a compound press. Beginners use it at home, in calisthenics or in functional training, for reps as a warmup, a main lift or a finisher.

How to

  1. Start in a high plank, hands slightly wider than shoulders.
  2. Keep your body in one straight line.
  3. Lower your chest to the floor, elbows about 45 degrees.
  4. Press back up to straight arms.

Form cues

  • Spread your fingers and press the floor away.
  • Squeeze your glutes so your hips do not sag.
  • Exhale as you press back up to the top.

Common mistakes

  • Hips sag toward the floor mid-rep. Tuck your hips and squeeze your glutes tight.
  • Head drops and chin juts toward the floor. Keep your neck long, eyes toward the floor ahead.
  • Feet stay narrow and the body wobbles. Set your feet a bit wider for a stable base.
