Lateral Raise

The dumbbell lateral raise lifts a dumbbell in each hand out to the sides until your arms reach shoulder height, elbows leading the way. It isolates the side delts, the muscle that gives shoulders their width, without help from the traps. Beginners use it at home or in the gym for light weight and higher reps, as a main lift or a finisher.

How to
- Stand tall with dumbbells at your sides.
- Keep a slight elbow bend.
- Raise your arms out to shoulder height, leading with elbows.
- Lower slowly without swinging.
Form cues
- Pause briefly at shoulder height before lowering.
- Keep a soft bend in your knees.
- Breathe out as your arms reach the top.
Common mistakes
- Traps take over and shoulders creep up. Keep your shoulders down and away from your ears.
- Momentum swings the dumbbells up. Slow down and lift with control, not momentum.
- Arms rise above shoulder height. Stop the raise once your arms are level with your shoulders.
