Cable Woodchopper
- Pro
- Intermediate
- Gym
The cable woodchopper sets the handle high and has you pull it diagonally across your body to the opposite hip, rotating through your trunk with nearly straight arms. It trains the obliques and abs through dynamic rotation rather than an anti-rotation hold. Intermediate lifters use it in the gym for weight and reps mainly as a finisher.

How to
- Set the handle high and stand side-on to the machine.
- Grip with both hands, arms nearly straight.
- Pull diagonally across your body to your opposite hip.
- Rotate through your trunk, return slowly, and finish both sides.
Form cues
- Pivot your back foot as you rotate.
- Drive the movement from your hips and trunk.
- Exhale sharply as you pull across your body.
Common mistakes
- Movement comes from the arms alone. Rotate through your trunk to power the pull.
- Back foot stays flat and fixed. Let your back foot pivot with the turn.
- Lower back twists instead of the whole trunk. Rotate your ribs and hips together as one.
