Ab Wheel Rollout

The ab wheel rollout is a kneeling core exercise: you brace your midsection and roll an ab wheel forward on straight arms, then pull it back to your knees. It loads the abs, obliques and lats as they resist your hips dropping toward the floor. It suits intermediate lifters training for reps at home or in the gym.

How to

  1. Kneel on the floor with the wheel under your shoulders.
  2. Brace your abs and roll the wheel forward with straight arms.
  3. Go as far as you can without letting your hips sag or back arch.
  4. Pull the wheel back to your knees using your abs, then repeat.

Form cues

  • Keep your shoulders away from your ears throughout.
  • Look a short distance ahead, not straight down.
  • Exhale as you drag the wheel back in.

Common mistakes

  • Hips sag toward the floor mid-roll. Shorten the rollout and brace your midsection tighter.
  • Shoulders creep up toward the ears. Pull your shoulder blades down before you roll out.
  • The wheel gets yanked back in with momentum. Slow the return down and lead with your abs.
