Leg Press
- Beginner
- Gym
The leg press seats you against a backrest and pushes a weighted platform away with your feet, moving through a squat-like pattern. It loads the quads and glutes together while the machine supports your torso and safeties control the range. Beginners in the gym use it for weight and reps, as a main lift or a finisher.

How to
- Sit with your feet shoulder-width on the platform.
- Release the safeties and unlock your knees.
- Lower until your knees are near 90 degrees.
- Press through your whole foot without locking out hard.
Form cues
- Keep your lower back flat against the pad.
- Exhale as you push the platform away.
- Avoid letting your knees cave inward.
Common mistakes
- Knees lock out hard at the top. Stop just short of a full knee lock.
- Lower back lifts off the pad at the bottom. Stop the descent before your hips round.
- Feet slide low, toes hanging off the platform. Center your feet fully on the platform.
