Russian Twist

  • Beginner
  • Home

The Russian twist is performed sitting back on your seat bones, knees bent and heels light or lifted off the floor, rotating your torso from side to side. It trains the obliques and abs through that rotation. Beginners use it at home for reps, as a warmup, a main core movement or a finisher.

How to

  1. Sit leaning back slightly, knees bent, heels light or lifted.
  2. Clasp your hands or hold a weight at your chest.
  3. Rotate your torso side to side with control.
  4. Keep your spine long and chest open throughout.

Form cues

  • Keep your hips facing forward as you rotate.
  • Exhale sharply each time you rotate to a side.
  • Move slowly enough to feel your waist working.

Common mistakes

  • Momentum swings the arms instead of the torso. Rotate from your ribs, not just your arms.
  • The chest collapses as the back rounds forward. Lift your chest and keep your spine tall.
  • Hips rock side to side with each twist. Pin your hips still and rotate only your torso.
