Oblique Crunch

  • Beginner
  • Home

The oblique crunch lies on your back with knees bent and hands behind your head, then curls up while rotating one shoulder toward the opposite knee. It isolates the obliques together with the abs through that rotating twist. Beginners use it at home for reps, as a warmup, a main core block or a finisher.

How to

  1. Lie on your back with knees bent, hands behind your head.
  2. Curl up and rotate one shoulder toward the opposite knee.
  3. Squeeze your obliques at the top.
  4. Lower slowly and alternate sides.

Form cues

  • Exhale sharply as your shoulder lifts and rotates.
  • Keep your lower back pressed into the floor.
  • Rest your hands lightly, do not pull your neck.

Common mistakes

  • Hands yank the neck up and forward. Keep hands light and lead with your ribs.
  • Lower back arches off the floor. Press your lower back flat before you curl.
  • The rep turns into a sit-up, not a twist. Rotate your shoulder, keep your hips still.
