Ankle Circles

  • Beginner
  • Mobility

Ankle circles are a standing mobility drill: you lift one foot and draw slow circles with your toes, rotating fully from the ankle joint. The motion works the calves and loosens the joint through its whole range before switching direction and sides. Beginners use it as a warmup, a cooldown, or light recovery work, counted in reps rather than loaded sets.

How to

  1. Stand tall and lift one foot slightly off the floor.
  2. Draw slow, full circles with your toes, rotating from the ankle.
  3. Complete the reps in one direction, then reverse the circle.
  4. Switch feet and repeat on the other side.

Form cues

  • Keep your standing leg still and your hips level.
  • Make the circle as wide as your ankle allows.
  • Move slowly enough to feel the whole joint work.

Common mistakes

  • Circles turn small and rushed. Slow down and draw the full circle each time.
  • Only the toes move, not the ankle. Drive the motion from the ankle joint itself.
  • Standing leg wobbles for balance. Fix your gaze on one point to stay steady.
