Lying Leg Curl
- Beginner
- Gym
The lying leg curl loads a machine pad against the back of your ankles while you lie face down on the bench. It isolates the hamstrings by curling your heels toward your glutes without involving your hips or quads. Beginners use it in the gym for weight and reps, as a main lift or a finisher after squats and lunges.

How to
- Lie face down with the pad just above your heels.
- Grip the handles and press your hips into the bench.
- Curl your heels toward your glutes.
- Lower slowly until your legs are straight.
Form cues
- Flex your toes toward your shins as you curl.
- Pause for a beat at the top of each rep.
- Exhale as you curl your heels up.
Common mistakes
- Hips lift off the bench during the curl. Press your hips down and keep them still.
- Momentum swings the weight up quickly. Curl the weight up slowly under control.
- Legs do not fully straighten at the bottom. Lower all the way until your legs are straight.
