Jump Squat

The jump squat takes a bodyweight squat and adds an explosive jump at the top, landing softly back into the next rep. It trains the quads, glutes and calves for power rather than just strength. Intermediate exercisers use it at home or in functional training, for reps as a finisher or a main conditioning move.

How to

  1. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart.
  2. Squat down to about parallel, arms back.
  3. Jump up explosively, reaching tall.
  4. Land softly into the next squat.

Form cues

  • Exhale sharply as you leave the ground.
  • Keep your chest up through the whole jump.
  • Push through the balls of your feet to take off.

Common mistakes

  • Knees cave in on the landing. Land with your knees tracking over your toes.
  • Landing is stiff and loud each rep. Bend your knees deeply to absorb the landing.
  • Arms flail instead of driving the jump. Swing your arms back, then drive them forward.
