Incline Dumbbell Press

  • Beginner
  • Gym

The incline dumbbell press is performed on an angled bench, dumbbells pressed up from the upper chest until your arms are straight. It trains the chest, front delts and triceps, with each arm moving on its own path. Beginners use it in the gym for weight and reps as a main lift.

How to

  1. Lie on an incline bench with dumbbells at your upper chest.
  2. Plant your feet and keep your wrists stacked.
  3. Press the dumbbells up until your arms are straight.
  4. Lower with control to a deep stretch.

Form cues

  • Keep your shoulder blades pulled back and down.
  • Exhale as you press the dumbbells up.
  • Bring the dumbbells slightly together at the top.

Common mistakes

  • Elbows flare straight out to the sides. Angle your elbows in, not straight out.
  • Dumbbells bounce off the chest at the bottom. Slow the descent before it touches your chest.
  • Feet lift off the floor during the press. Press your feet flat into the floor.
