Hanging Leg Raise

  • Intermediate
  • Gym
  • Calisthenics

The hanging leg raise hangs you from a pull-up bar with straight arms while you lift straight legs to hip height or higher. It isolates the abs through trunk flexion, using your bodyweight as the only load. Intermediate trainees use it in the gym or calisthenics for reps, as a main lift or finisher.

How to

  1. Hang from the bar with straight arms.
  2. Keep your legs straight and lift them to hip height or above.
  3. Curl your pelvis slightly at the top.
  4. Lower slowly without swinging.

Form cues

  • Keep your shoulders pulled down away from your ears.
  • Exhale as your legs rise toward your chest.
  • Keep your body still, without any swinging momentum.

Common mistakes

  • Legs swing to build momentum. Lift with control and stop any swing.
  • Knees bend to cheat the height. Keep your knees locked straight throughout.
  • Shoulders shrug up toward the ears. Pull your shoulder blades down and back.
