Sit-up

The sit-up curls your whole spine up off the floor from a bent-knee lying position to a full seated finish, arms crossed or reaching forward. Curling through the full range trains the abs to control trunk flexion from start to finish, not just the first few degrees. Beginners use it at home or in functional training for reps, as a warmup, a main exercise or a finisher.

How to

  1. Lie on your back with knees bent, feet flat.
  2. Cross your arms or reach them forward.
  3. Curl all the way up to sitting.
  4. Lower back down with control, one vertebra at a time.

Form cues

  • Exhale as you curl your ribs toward your hips.
  • Keep your chin tucked, not jutting forward.
  • Move at a steady pace, not a jerk.

Common mistakes

  • Hands yank the head and neck up. Rest your hands lightly without pulling your neck.
  • Momentum flings the torso up too fast. Curl up smoothly using only your abs.
  • Feet pop up off the floor mid-rep. Press your feet flat into the floor throughout.
