Scissors

  • Beginner
  • Pilates

Scissors has you lying on your back with your shoulders lifted and both legs extended toward the ceiling, lowering one leg while holding the other toward your chest with a double pulse. It trains the abs to keep your hips level while the hamstrings work to hold the raised leg. Beginners use it for reps as a warmup, cooldown or recovery flow, without equipment.

How to

  1. Lie on your back, shoulders lifted, legs extended up.
  2. Lower one leg while holding the other toward you.
  3. Pulse gently twice, hips level.
  4. Switch legs in a smooth scissor motion.

Form cues

  • Exhale sharply on each of the two pulses.
  • Press your lower back flat into the mat.
  • Keep your neck relaxed, chin tucked slightly down.

Common mistakes

  • Your lower back arches off the mat. Pull your abs in and flatten your spine.
  • Your hips rock from side to side. Keep both hips level and squared to the ceiling.
  • Your neck strains as your head drops back. Keep your chin tucked and your neck long.
