Front Raise

The front raise is a standing dumbbell exercise, arms nearly straight as you lift the weight forward to shoulder height. It isolates the front delts, unlike a press that also works the triceps and chest. Beginners use it at home or in the gym for weight and reps, one arm or both together.

How to
- Stand tall with dumbbells resting on your thighs.
- Keep your arms nearly straight.
- Raise one or both dumbbells to shoulder height.
- Lower slowly without swinging.
Form cues
- Keep your torso still without leaning back.
- Exhale as you lift the dumbbells up.
- Stop level with your shoulders, not higher.
Common mistakes
- Body rocks back to swing the weight up. Brace your core and keep your torso still.
- Dumbbells rise higher than shoulder height. Stop the raise level with your shoulders.
- Shoulders shrug up toward the ears. Keep your shoulders pulled down and relaxed.
