Hip Twist
- Pro
- Intermediate
- Pilates
Hip twist has you sit leaning back on your hands with legs extended up together, circling both legs to one side, down and around while your trunk stays braced and still. It trains the abs and obliques through rotation rather than flexion. Intermediate exercisers use it as a warmup, cooldown or recovery flow, for reps.

How to
- Sit leaning back on your hands, legs extended up together.
- Keep your trunk still and core braced.
- Circle both legs to one side, down, and around.
- Reverse the direction each rep.
Form cues
- Press your palms down to support your upper body.
- Keep your shoulders down and away from your ears.
- Time your exhale to the bottom of each circle.
Common mistakes
- Trunk rocks and rotates along with the legs. Anchor your shoulders and hips so only your legs move.
- Circles shrink into a small, timid motion. Keep the circle wide through its full range.
- Knees bend as the legs come around. Keep your legs straight through the whole circle.
