Band Overhead Shoulder Press

The band overhead shoulder press starts with the handles at shoulder height and presses them straight overhead against the band before lowering back down. It trains the front delts, triceps and traps the way a dumbbell or barbell overhead press does. It works at home or in the gym for reps, mainly as a main pressing lift.

How to

  1. Stand on the band and bring your hands to shoulder height.
  2. Brace your core and keep your ribs down.
  3. Press both hands straight overhead against the band.
  4. Lower back to your shoulders with control.

Form cues

  • Keep your gaze forward, not tilted up at your hands.
  • Squeeze your glutes to stop your back from arching.
  • Exhale hard as you lock out overhead.

Common mistakes

  • Lower back arches to help press overhead. Tuck your ribs down before you press each rep.
  • Elbows flare out wide at the bottom. Start with your elbows closer to your body.
  • Neck cranes forward to clear the path overhead. Move your head back slightly as your hands pass by.
